Arts project builds bridges

September 17, 2004

An ambitious arts project promises a safe, stylish and environmentally friendly river crossing from Langport to the River Parrett Visitors Centre.

Local artist Richard La Trobe Bateman and design engineer Mark Lovell are putting the finishing touches to a contemporary yet timeless design to link Cocklemoor with the River Parrett Visitors Centre by bridge.

Adjacent to the historic Bow Bridge the new bridge is part of Sensing the Land - a programme of artworks specifically created to enhance and celebrate the River Parrett.

Working from his Shepton Mallet studio Richard's focus has been to design a simple bridge using as little material as possible. The result is a refined, linear form that appears both contemporary and timeless.

As part of the project an emerging young visual artist Pandora Vaughan has shadowed Richard.

Working alongside the artist, engineer and other team members Pandora has gained a valuable insight into the design development process, helping her to develop her own project to enhance near by Staceys Court bridge.

Design engineering practice Mark Lovell Design Engineers have been working with Richard to provide innovative solutions to the technical design and fabrication of the bridge. All their projects integrate sustainable environmental values and balance the use of technology with traditional skills.

Plans also include the creation of a pathway leading to the bridge from the main town car park, making a short circular walk to avoid the busy road bridge.

It is hoped the bridge will be in use early next summer.

Sam Crabb, SCC portfolio holder for Culture, Inclusion & Access said: "This is a really exciting project for Langport.

"The design of the bridge which involved local young people and a local architect is great.

"This is another example of our county's policy to encourage public art in developments."

The project is grant aided by SCC Local Transport Plan, the Levels and Moors partnership, the Arts Lottery, South Somerset District Council and Leader Plus.

The project is a major cross cutting exercise for SCC bring together officers in arts, tourism, regeneration, countryside, technical and community development.

This partnership has extended to include the River Parrett Management Group, Sensing the Land, and a host of funders and interest groups including the Bow Yard development, the River Group, and the Langport Area Development Trust.
