Valuable Bronzes stolen
September 17, 2004

Somerset County Council is asking for help from the public after four valuable bronze sculptures were stolen from one of its 'Somerset Arts Week' displays. All three sculptures are the work of Sukey Erland from Pilton. They were taken sometime between five p.m. last night (Thurs) and first thing this morning from East Lambrook Gardens.

The art works depict a swan, a whippet, Eve - a woman with out-stretched arms, and an otter holding a fish. The statue of Eve is just under four feet high, the other works slightly smaller.

Councillor Sam Crabb, portfolio holder for Culture, inclusion and access, says: "This is clearly a major blow. It's almost certain that someone must have used a vehicle of some sort to take away these items. We are appealing for anyone who might have seen a vehicle near the gardens over-night to come forward."

Councillor Crabb added: "It is likely that the thieves will offer these pieces for sale. We call on both dealers and the members of the public to be alert and to get in touch with the police if they think they see these bronzes coming to the market or offered privately."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crimestoppers 0n 0800 555 111 or any police station.
